BACK. THE. BLUE.

Friend, we must always BACK THE BLUE.

In my home state Nebraska and nationwide, police and sheriff departments are experiencing a staffing shortage crisis. The Police Executive Research Forum informs us that officers are leaving their jobs faster than they can be replaced, with 47% more resignations and 19% more retirements last year than there were in 2019.

There’s a great need for new common sense measures to aid our officers and departments, Friend, and that’s why I’m contacting you today.

I’m working with my Senate colleagues to introduce two further bills -- the Project Safe Neighborhoods Act of 2023 would continue to fund crucial and effective solutions to violent crime through 2026 -- and the Back the Blue Act, which would federally mandate tougher punishment for criminals who attack our police.

We’ve seen too little support for our tireless law enforcement officers and departments who sacrifice so much for us and it’s high time we honored them with more assistance, greater respect and stronger protections they deserve.
