The issue is this: our fundraising has slowed down a lot — at the same time that our work is picking up.

I founded Courier Newsroom because the way Americans get their news has changed.

Local newsrooms keep closing, leaving millions of Americans to rely on social media feeds and inboxes to learn about important local issues and news. 

The problem is, these online spaces are also where dangerous disinformation thrives. We’ve seen the toll these kinds of claims can have — whether it’s dividing our communities, or even stoking political violence like we saw on January 6th.

At Courier Newsroom, we believe the best antidote to bad information is good information. For us, that means providing factual, relevant local journalism to the communities and online spaces where disinformation spreads. 

To accomplish that, we do things a little differently. For example, we do NOT:

• Hide our stories behind paywalls — and we never will.
• Publish sensational stories — instead, we focus on the issues that actually matter like what’s going on in your state and local government.
• Let profit drive our reporting — because of our grassroots supporters, we’re free to cover stories that actually matter to our readers.

And while major news groups like The Washington Post, Buzzfeed, and CNN are announcing massive layoffs, we’re not.

Because of support from grassroots donors like you, we’re able to retain our talented reporters and stay true to our values.

Right now, our reporters have their work cut out for them — with Ron DeSantis joining the race for president and important state and local elections just around the corner.
