Hi, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has gotten over $10 million through undisclosed payments to his wife from corporate law firms with cases in front of the court.1 Clarence Thomas and his wife secretly took millions in gifts and cash payments from a Republican megadonors and lobbyists.2 Other justices have ethics scandals as well. And yet, the chief justice STILL refuses to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the raft of ethics scandals engulfing him and other justices.3 The public has a right to hear John Roberts and the other justices answer questions under oath. We’re mobilizing grassroots pressure calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena John Roberts and force him to do just that.
While Roberts refuses to testify under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a few days ago, he turned around and gave a speech at a swanky awards dinner, arguing that the Supreme Court has no serious ethics problems.4 Who does he think he’s fooling? The list of ethical violations unveiled in recent months is truly jaw-dropping. John Roberts’s wife, a high-powered legal headhunter, took millions of dollars from top corporate law firms that regularly argue before the Supreme Court. Roberts didn’t disclose the money or recuse himself from any of the cases where his wife's clients were involved. Justice Clarence Thomas and his family secretly accepted sweetheart real estate deals, luxury vacations, and cash payments from a shadowy network of Republicans who convinced him to reverse at least one of his judicial opinions. Justice Neil Gorsuch sold a vacation home in Colorado to the head of a major law firm that has argued dozens of cases before the court, and he has not recused himself in any of those cases.5 These clear ethical breaches — combined with extreme right-wing rulings that strip away fundamental human rights — have caused public support of the Supreme Court to sink to an all-time low.6 We’ve mobilized over 100,000 people to demand a binding code of ethics for the Supreme Court, and now we’re calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena John Roberts and other justices to testify under oath about their shady business deals and lavish undisclosed gifts.
