As terrifying as the reality is: Trump could win again in 2020.

This week, multiple polls show his approval is now between 49% and 50%. As shocking as this sounds, Trump is enjoying the highest approval rating of any president since 2005.

Gallup polls from the end of January show that Trump’s approval is continuing to rise among Republicans and Independents while the percentage of respondents who identify as Democrats is falling.

Trump’s administration and the Republican party’s racist, xenophobic, amoral and unAmerican policies may not be swaying public opinion as much as we think they should. Polls can change. Opinion can change. But with a fascistic administration unleashed and emboldened by the Senate’s acquittal, these latest polls send a chilling message.

This should come as no surprise. How informed is the electorate? How often do media outlets actually cover and inform the public about policy?

The heartwrenching irony is that polls also show sweeping support for policies that Republicans oppose. For instance, most Americans wanted to see witnesses in the impeachment hearing. The majority of Americans are united on issues such as common-sense gun legislation, Medicare for All, and subsidized child care. So where is the disconnect?

The Democratic party's lukewarm approach to policy and shady electoral policies are also to blame. What is their strategy for 2020? Why do does the party leadership continue to support corrupt corporate candidates? They too are responsible for spreading the myth of the "socialist boogeyman."

All of this means it's on us, the progressive movement, to spread our message and reach as many people as we can. We must support progressive candidates and reach voters at their doors and in their communities, so we elect a Brand New Congress that will fight for policies the people want--regardless of who sits in the White House.

With the majority of Americans standing behind progressive policies, we can right this ship and save our democracy.
