Daily Docket — Friday, May 26

Yesterday, the New Jersey Assembly approved a bill that would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they turn 18 before the next general election. The Democratic-controlled chamber’s step is just one example of policy solutions that could improve youth voting. Read about other policies here.

Here are some updates you may have missed.

• The Texas Legislature is taking steps to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) for bribery, retaliation against whistleblowers and obstruction of justice. In 2020, Paxton filed an unsuccessful petition in the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the presidential election results in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

• Today, a federal court allowed the Republican National Committee to join a lawsuit to defend a Florida law that requires voter registration applications to be submitted with a pen-on-paper signature. Voting groups argue that the law violates the Materiality Provision of the Civil Rights Act.

• Two bills saw important legislative movement yesterday:

• • The Texas Legislature passed a bill that would make voting easier for individuals with disabilities. Now that it has passed both chambers, it goes to Gov. Greg Abbott (R) for his signature.

• • The Connecticut Senate passed a state-level Voting Rights Act. The bill now heads to the Connecticut House for consideration.

• Also yesterday, a three-judge panel dismissed a challenge to Arkansas’ congressional map drawn with 2020 census data. The panel held that the plaintiffs didn’t plausibly show that race was the main factor that was used to draw the map.

Here's what to expect coming up.

• On Tuesday morning, the U.S. Supreme Court will release an order list for pending cases. We’re waiting to see if the Court decides to hear a redistricting case out of Ohio or a felony disenfranchisement case from Mississippi.
