May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges that many veterans face when it comes to mental health.

In our latest blog post, we explore the impact that military service has on veterans and how important it is to provide support throughout their service and once they finish. We’re committed to training and electing more veterans in office so they can make a difference in the lives of veterans across the country.

Katrina Callsen

Katrina recently launched her campaign to represent Virginia’s 54th district in the House of Delegates. Her dual roles as an elected leader for Albemarle County and Deputy City Attorney for Charlottesville have given her the unique experience of witnessing the impact of state laws on her community daily. She works tirelessly to improve academic achievement and empower students with skills and opportunities. Having experienced firsthand the consequences of having fundamental rights denied, Katrina knows how vital it is to have a hard-working representative advocating for the future.

New Power helps candidates overcome the barriers that so often prevent people like them from seeking and winning public office, barriers similar to those faced by women and working class candidates such as lack of social capital, absence of a fundraising base, lack of the “right credentials,” and many more. The New Power Project’s mission is to break down these barriers and expand the pathways into elected office for a new generation of servant leaders.

This month, we endorsed two New Power candidates, Danny Cage and Michael Carpenter.

Danny Cage has spent his career fighting for what is right, and will bring that same dedication to the Multnomah Education Service District. With his well-rounded experiences in both community organizing and government service, Danny will fight to ensure every student has access to a quality education.

From serving in Iraq to co-founding the Takaway Foundation, Michael Carpenter has dedicated his life to uplifting his community. Michael is a leader who truly cares about advocating and improving the lives of those in underserved communities.

Angela Clay won her election for Alderperson in Chicago’s 46th Ward! As a student leader and founding member of Voices of Youth in Chicago Education, she has been committed to bringing positive change to her community from an early age. Angela’s passion for policy led her to earn a degree in public policy from DePaul University and became the youngest-ever president of Voice of the People in Uptown, where she worked to improve the lives of hundreds of residents in her community. With her deep understanding of the community’s needs and challenges, Angela is dedicated to building a sustainable and equitable future for all.
