Governor requests federal judge be removed from Disney lawsuit. Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker is currently overseeing the suit brought by Disney against Gov. Ron DeSantis and his appointees.

Federal Matters

White House releases statement marking International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The statement reiterated the Biden administration’s support for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion on the day that commemorates the World Health Organization delisting homosexuality as a psychological disorder on May 17, 1990.

DHS warns of danger to LGBTQ+ community. The Department of Homeland Security released a document to government agencies and law enforcement stating that extremists have increased the level of threats and violence towards the LGBTQ+ community in the last year. The document also warns of the potential for attacks against public spaces and healthcare sites linked to the LGBTQ+ community.

Federal agencies discussing offering MPOX vaccines at pride events. Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, the deputy coordinator for the White House’s national MPOX response, revealed the internal deliberations during a briefing hosted by the CDC on May 18th.

State Matters

Warning: While some of the following stories describe legislative actions to celebrate and affirm LGBTQ+ people, many cover legislation targeting the LGBTQ+ community, particularly trans and non-binary youth. Please be kind to yourself and use your discretion while reading this section.

Alabama - LGBTQ+ Alabamians rally against anti-trans legislation. Hundreds of people marched to the state house in Montgomery on May 16th to protest five different bills that will harm the queer community in the state.

Florida - St. Cloud cancels Pride in aftermath of threats and anti-LGBTQ+ laws. In an announcement on May 19th the organizers of ‘PRIDE in St. Cloud’ said it would be unsafe to hold the event in light of threats made to the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and the state law restricting drag performances.

NAACP issues travel advisory for Florida. The President & CEO of the organization, Derrick Johnson, made the announcement on May 20th in response to the actions of Governor Ron DeSantis, including blocking AP courses on African American studies and banning “critical race theory” in public schools, following the earlier advisory issued by Equality Florida..

Louisiana - Ban on gender-affirming care defeated. HB 648 was stopped in the Senate Health and Welfare Committee after the committee voted to kill the bill. The legislation would have banned medically necessary care for trans youth in the state.

Massachusetts - LGBTQ+ youth program helps teens from unaccepting environments. The program is called Summer of Sass and seeks to help LGBTQ+ 18- to 20-year-olds get space from the harassment they may face back home in less accepting areas of the country. The program is based out of a dedicated house in Provincetown.

Montana - State becomes first to ban drag performers from reading to children in schools and libraries. HB 359 bars any event “hosted by a drag queen or drag king who reads children’s books and engages in other learning activities with minor children present.” The bill was signed into law on May 22nd by Gov. Greg Gianforte.

Nebraska - Governor signs abortion restriction, gender-affirming care ban. On May 22nd, Governor Jim Pillen signed Legislative Bill 574 which limits abortion access to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and bars trans people under 19 from accessing medically necessary care.

New Jersey-  Hanover adopts policy to ‘out’ LGBTQ+ students to parents. The Hanover Township School District has adopted a new policy that teachers and staff must notify parents of any circumstances that would allegedly impact their child’s mental health, including sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. The state Attorney General office has filed a civil rights complaint against the school district and hopes to block the policy from ever being implemented.

North Carolina - LGBTQ+-friendly congregation singled out by anti-LGBTQ+ protesters, forced to temporarily stop services. The First Congregational Church in Laurel Park was picketed by out-of-state activists for being inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community. 

Texas - Advocates decry ‘don’t say gay’ regulation added to education bill being considered. HB 890, which initially was focused on parental rights in curriculum decisions, now has a provision that bans trans students from expressing that they are trans in a school setting. The bill also now bans “instruction, guidance, activities, or programming regarding sexual orientation or gender identity to students enrolled in prekindergarten through 12th grade.”

State poised to ban gender-affirming care for minors. SB 14, which would prevent youth from accessing medically necessary care, was sent to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk on May 24th who said that he will sign the bill into law.

Global Matters

El Salvador - Trans community faces widespread discrimination as legal rights remain unfulfilled. Despite courts backing the right of trans Salvadorians to change their birth certificates and IDs to reflect their gender identity, government employees refuse to comply with the rulings.

France - Paris Olympics 2024 organizers say they will have inclusive message and Pride House. The President of the organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, said that “Paris 2024 has a fantastic opportunity to communicate and demonstrate that this situation has to evolve” in reference to the need for progress on LGBTQ+ rights in France and around the world.

Israel - In first, religious authority provides funds for LGBTQ+ group. The Tel Aviv local religious council has given a grant to Bat Kol, a LGBTQ+ rights group for Orthodox Jewish women, marking the first time in Israeli history that Orthodox authorities, who have a monopoly on regulating Jewish religious law in Israel, have offered funding for an LGBTQ+ organization.

Ivory Coast - First LGBTQ+ magazine in West Africa faces publishing hurdles. Meleagbo, created by Gromo, a LBGTQ+ rights NGO based in Ivory Coast, is struggling to find a printer willing to work with the LGBTQ+ community. 

Namibia - Supreme Court rules in favor of recognizing out-of-country same-sex marriages. The 4-1 ruling overruled a previous decision by the court against the rights of same-sex couples to have their out-of-country marriages recognized.

Uganda - Activist to return to Uganda despite arrest risk. DeLovie Kwagala also known as “Papa De” has lived in South Africa since 2021 and plans to return to Uganda this month because of their expiring visa. Kwagala, a nonbinary photographer and social activist, faces the risk of being arrested under the country’s laws penalizing the promotion of “homosexuality” with 20 years of jail time.

Media Matters

SPLC head announces support for AAPI history education bill. The Teaching Asian Pacific American History Act would lead to greater education of students on the history and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Margaret Huang, a Chinese American and the President of the Southern Poverty Law Center, declared her organization's support for the Act which was introduced by Rep. Grace Meng (NY-6) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI).

Anaheim mayor invites queer nun organization to Angels’ Pride Night. Mayor Ashleigh Aitken invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to the Los Angeles Angels' Pride festivities after they had been disinvited from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Pride event. The Dodgers subsequently reinvited the Sisters to attend their June 16th Pride Night and apologized for rescinding their original invitation.  

Actor, singer, and activist Billy Porter to lead New York City Pride march. Porter along with Yasmine Benoit and AC Dunalo will be grand marshals of the march on June 25th

Trans youth prom held in nation’s capital. PFLAG National’s Board member Marilyn Willis and her daughter Raquel and staffer Diego Sanchez were part of the welcoming party for trans and nonbinary youth and their families who convened in Washington, D.C., on the National Mall to hold #TransProm #TransJoy on May 22nd. The event, conceived by the youth, was a celebration of the community’s strength and love in the face of increasing adversity, and was backed by supporters such as actor Elliot Page, singers Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande, and director Lilly Wachowski. 

Google honors Indigenous and LGBTQ+ activist Barbara May Cameron with Google Doodle on the main page. Cameron was a photographer and writer and co-founded the first American Indian LGBTQ+ advocacy group in 1975.
