Hello everyone,

Lori here — I hope all of you are doing well and enjoying the spring weather. I wanted to share a brief message with you all today, as Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end.

Mental health is something that affects all of us , and while it’s not a new issue by any means, the increased stress folks have been facing — due to the pandemic and increased living costs, among other things — has brought a new level of urgency to this crisis.

What I wanted to tell you all today, however, is that for me, being “aware” of these issues is only the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, it’s taken a lot of hard work for our country to get to the point of having these open and honest conversations, but we can’t stop here.

In addition to simply ending the stigma associated with getting help, we need to be working just as hard to make sure that everyone who needs assistance is actually able to access it.

As a mom of two young girls, I’m heartened that I’ve been able to help make progress towards this goal for our kids in particular. In 2022, I was so proud to secure the passage of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Reauthorization Act , a bill which renewed critical youth mental health and suicide prevention programs just months away from expiring.

And this year, I’m excited to work with my colleagues on our Mentoring to Succeed Act , a bill which would bring research-backed school support to students across our country facing poverty, inadequate schooling, disability, adverse childhood experiences, drug or alcohol abuse, and more.
