‘This is inhumane’: Hundreds of migrants wait in San Diego County desert, lack food, water, shelter
“Cities like San Diego and El Paso have been under close watch as Title 42, a pandemic-era policy that turned away millions of migrants, ended Thursday. But in a less visible part of San Diego County, the change has brought about a humanitarian crisis.

As many as 700 migrants are seeking shelter in a remote stretch of desert near Jacumba Hot Springs in East County, about half a mile from the U.S.-Mexico border, where the border wall stops and mountains begin.”

“Few aid groups had made it to the site by Friday afternoon. Border Angels, a nonprofit humanitarian group based in San Diego, dropped off water that day, and more groups, including Universidad Popular and Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, said they were on the way by late Friday afternoon. The remote location is accessible only by dirt road, and mainly by vehicles with four-wheel drive, which has strained access to resources.”

Last week Border Angels, Border Kindness, Armadillos Busqueda Y Rescate, and other community orgs worked together to provide emergency aid and supplies to over 500 migrants and asylum seekers who were being held at an encampment in the desert. We received dozens of distress calls and our team traveled about an hour to provide food, water, electrolytes, blankets, sanitary products, and hygiene items. There were women, children, many migrants who were hungry, dehydrated, tired, and in desperate need of assistance.

We made a call out to our followers for donations and you all answered the call. We cannot thank you enough for the hundreds of donations delivered to us, the donation drives held by community members, and by spreading awareness of the border situation. Thank you for helping us help so many migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers.

THANK YOU.

Frontera At Berkeley

Back in 2019, we had the opportunity to meet with Olympian High School’s M.E.Ch.A club, where we had an educational presentation, and the students had the opportunity to collect donations in kind.

On Tuesday, 4 years later, one of the club’s members came back to visit us and donate gallons of water covered in messages of love. Now as college students, Luis and Damaris form part of Frontera at Berkeley, a student-run organization at UC Berkeley seeking to highlight and find solutions for US/Mexico border issues.

“Being from the border ourselves, working in tandem with non-profits and mutual aid groups doing the groundwork is essential to informing and advocating for our communities.”
We are filled with pride seeing their passion and initiative, and at the impact of our work, and watching them become leaders in their communities.

If your school/group/organization would like to join us or find out what other educational opportunities are available please email us at [email protected] today!

Jacumba migrant encampment reportedly cleared, but Border Patrol blocking access
A makeshift migrant encampment in the Jacumba wilderness is reported to be completely cleared out after an estimated 700 men, women and children gathered for days without food, water or shelter, according to humanitarian aid groups on the ground.

Between 300 to 400 migrants who remained at the remote site Monday afternoon were cleared out by that evening, according to Vino Pajanor, CEO of Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, which operates several migrant shelters in San Diego and Imperial counties.

At least two additional smaller migrant encampments in the Jacumba area were also cleared. Nearby residents who organized supply drives for the migrants asked Catholic Charities to pick up the remaining supplies, Pajanor said.

9 migrants found, 41 still missing after kidnapping in Mexico
Nine migrants were found Tuesday by Mexican authorities after a group was kidnapped on its way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

A bus holding 50 migrants left Tapachula, Chiapas, on Sunday and disappeared the following day near Matehuala, San Luis Potosí.

The migrants had permission to transit through Mexico and decided to take a bus to head to the border.

The owner of the company received a call asking for a thousand dollars for each of the passengers on the bus, the vice president of National Confederation of Mexican Carriers in San Luis Potosí said.

A first for Denver: Texas buses migrants to the city
For the first time, another state has transported migrants to Denver, according to the city. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the migrants were dropped off near Civic Center Park on Thursday afternoon.

“Until the president and his administration step up and fulfill their constitutional duty to secure the border, the state of Texas will continue busing migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities like Denver to provide much-needed relief to our small border towns,” Abbott said in a statement.

Texas state officials organized the chartered bus with 41 migrants — a first for Denver, the city said. People had been arriving on commercial transportation until this first state-sponsored bus.

Mayor Michael Hancock pointed to the situation as a “humanitarian crisis” and rejected Abbott’s actions as a “stunt.”

“What none of us need is more political theater and partisan gamesmanship pitting jurisdictions against each other and exacerbating this situation instead of advocating for real solutions to this challenge,” Hancock said in a statement.
