Join the movement: hundreds protest return of US nukes to Britain

Last Saturday, hundreds of CND supporters gathered at Lakenheath airbase in Suffolk for a lively and colourful protest against the return of US nuclear weapons to Britain.

Activists came from across Britain and were joined by international peace campaigners Guido van Leemput from the Netherlands, and Reiner Braun from Germany, who spoke about the opposition to the siting of US/NATO nuclear weapons in their own countries.

Other speakers included CND Chair Tom Unterrainer, Scottish CND Chair Lynne Jamieson, Mayer Wakefield of Stop the War Coalition, Joy Croft from Norwich CND, and Norwich Councillor Gary Champion, while a statement was read out on behalf of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. All speakers made clear that this is part of an ongoing campaign that will only get bigger – saying no to US nuclear weapons coming to Britain!

In addition to speeches, there were art and plane spotting workshops, music from samba band XR Rhythms, and a performance piece by playwright Michael Mears. A strong visual presence was maintained outside the base all afternoon making CND's message clear!

CND renews calls for dialogue as Russia moves forward on deploying nukes to Belarus

On Thursday, defence ministers from Russia and Belarus announced a new agreement on Russia stationing its nuclear weapons in Belarus from this summer. Hours after the agreement was announced, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko suggested Russian nuclear weapons were already on their way!

An online survey conducted by Chatham House found that 74 percent of Belarusian respondents are opposed to the stationing of nuclear weapons in Belarus.

CND General Secretary Kate Hudson said: “The deployment of nuclear weapons across Europe – either by Russia or NATO – seriously raises the chances of their use - or an accident where they are stationed.” Read her full comment here.
