If SCOTUS won’t act, Congress will.

Dick Durbin

John,

After recent revelations about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas receiving lavish gifts and vacations from GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow, the Senate Judiciary Committee – which I’m proud to Chair – has been working to dig into these matters and highlight the urgent need for ethics reform at the Court.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if the Chief Justice won’t take action, the Senate Judiciary Committee will. The American people deserve to know that the highest court in the land is not for sale to the highest bidder. Will you add your name if you’re with me?

Just this week, Harlan Crow’s attorneys tried to justify the billionaire donor’s lack of response to our questions about his relationship with Justice Thomas. The lawyers also falsely claimed that Congress does not have the authority to enact legislation pertaining to Supreme Court Justices.

I have supported an enforceable code of ethics since I first wrote to the Chief Justice more than a decade ago. Since then, the public’s confidence in the Supreme Court has reached new lows.

This is plain common sense. Every other federal judge abides by a code of conduct. Our Supreme Court Justices should be expected to do the same.

I know I can always count on this team to join these efforts when it matters most. Sign on now and support an enforceable code of conduct for the Supreme Court.

My best,

Dick Durbin
