Dear friend – It’s hard to believe a year has passed since nineteen children and two teachers lost their lives to a mass shooter in Uvalde, Texas.

Our pain for the families is still visceral and deep. As a mother and grandmother, it takes my breath away; as an American, it infuriates me; as a legislator, it fuels me to action.

I know I’m not alone in my feelings – the vast majority of Americans agree that our gun violence problem must be confronted. Just look at this: Since Uvalde, there have been more than 750 mass shootings in the United States.

As a representative in Washington, I believe we are responsible for ending this uniquely American tragedy.

With one vote House Republicans could pass common sense legislation to prevent gun violence – such as an assault weapons ban or red flag laws that our Democratic majority passed last year. But they haven’t done it. Despite the national consensus, my colleagues across the aisle refuse to take action on this ongoing public health epidemic.

We should be doing everything we can to prevent more innocent lives from being lost to gun violence. If you agree we need comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation, add your name here and stand with me.

Students deserve to feel safe at school, and parents should not have to worry about sending their children to learn. All Americans deserve to feel safe from gun violence.

The NRA and the gun lobby have made a living out of keeping children and families in harm’s way by pouring money to Republican candidates. Massacre after massacre — continued inaction is unacceptable.

We are failing children and we are failing families.

But as long as I’m in Congress, friend, I will continue to advocate for solutions to reduce gun violence. If you agree that it’s past time we curb such tragic, preventable loss of lives, add your name next to mine to support gun violence prevention legislation.

I am confident we can change tragic outcomes like the devastation in Uvalde, but we must work together to do so. We owe it to every single family who has lost a loved one to gun violence.

With determination,

Madeleine
