Right now, as the United States government is running out of time to avoid defaulting on its debts, Republicans are using the negotiations as a hostage to try and make massive cuts to health care, housing, education, Social Security, and more.
Let's be perfectly clear: What Republicans are doing is not negotiating — they're simply playing stupid games. They're holding the American people hostage while threatening to wipe out people's savings, take away millions of jobs, and plunge the world economy into depression.
These are the same Republicans who had no issues unconditionally raising the debt ceiling three times under President Trump. That's because this crisis has never been about deficits or spending for the GOP — it has always been about wealth transfer.
They want to take away food stamps, kick millions off health insurance, make it easier for the rich and powerful to dodge taxes, block student loan forgiveness, kill green energy jobs and our efforts to fight the climate crisis, and cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits, all so they can give $3 trillion more in tax cuts to their billionaire friends and large corporations.
Kevin McCarthy and the Republican Party are playing a dangerous game with the lives and well-being of millions of Americans at stake — and like every hostage situation, someone is likely going to get hurt.
It is absolutely critical that we raise the debt ceiling, prevent worldwide economic disaster, and protect the poor and working class from the right wing's cruelty — and the clock is ticking to get it done.
Fortunately, there is still an avenue that President Biden can take if Republicans continue to stall and sabotage — invoking the 14th Amendment, which states that the "validity of the public debt of the United States [...] shall not be questioned."
The United States must pay its bills on time, and we cannot use the lives of working families as bargaining chips. Crises like these demand bold action, so please:
