John — I never imagined I would run for office. That changed
after Trump was elected. I was sitting in my living room and I saw my
then-Congressman beaming with pride on the White House lawn, celebrating
his vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and the protections for people
with preexisting conditions that were part of it.

In 2011, my mom died of ovarian cancer. She had a pre-existing condition
long before that — she had breast cancer at 31 — which meant insurance
companies could gouge her, making care nearly impossible to maintain. So
when I saw that GOP party on the White House lawn, something inside me
broke. 

Because of my experience of my mom desperately needing care after she had
no insurance, I look at things differently.  And that’s why I try to be
accessible to people and do something not enough people do, listen. 

I’m also part of a different generation of leaders, many of whom only got
into politics when Donald Trump won, and who approach elected positions
differently — most importantly remembering we are public servants. And if
elected, I would be the youngest Democratic woman to serve in the Senate.

Our country is in need of new leadership, and I can feel that through the
hundreds of conversations I have per week. With our new Democratic
majority in Michigan, we are using that (slim) majority to make real
change on things like abortion rights, LGBTQ protections, repealing Right
to Work, and passing a slate of gun violence prevention bills into law.
And the people of Michigan feel that change in the air.

That change can happen in the Senate, too — but it starts by defending
seats like this one right here in Michigan. There are a handful of new
leaders running across the country that are poised to be a different
generation in the Senate.
