Dear John,
20 years ago this year, African Governments adopted the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol) ([link removed]) , defining the rights of women and girls across Africa. So far, following relentless advocacy efforts by the SOAWR Coalition, 43 of the 55 African states have ratified the Protocol.
Throughout the year, together with the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights Coalition (SOAWR ([link removed]) ), we’ll be celebrating twenty years of one of the world’s most progressive women’s rights treaties.
We can’t wait to join women’s rights activists, policymakers, duty-bearers, and academics across the continent to celebrate this groundbreaking women’s rights treaty and call for action to ensure the Protocol’s universal ratification and full implementation.
