Promoting vapes to kids is ridiculous, says Rishi Sunak
It is "ridiculous" that vapes are promoted to children, Rishi Sunak has said as he pledged to look at ways of strengthening marketing rules. Speaking to ITV's This Morning, the prime minister said he didn't want his daughters "seduced by these things".
A recent study by Action on Smoking Health found that corner shops were "the main source of purchase and child awareness of instore promotion had grown significantly in the last year".
Vapes or e-cigarettes are generally considered to be safer than normal cigarettes because they do not contain harmful tobacco. The government says vaping is "an important tool" to help adults give up smoking and contribute to its target of making smoking obsolete in England by 2030. However, it also says children should not take up vaping and has launched a consultation seeking evidence on how the appearance and promotion of vapes may attract children.
Labour has said it would ban vapes from being branded and advertised to appeal to children if it wins power. The party has also promised to work with local councils and the NHS to ensure vapes "are being used as a stop smoking aide, rather than a new form of smoking".

VPZ offers vape recycling service in store
Vape retailer VPZ has teamed up with WasteCare to launch a nationwide recycling service for e-cigarettes. Doug Mutter, director at VPZ, said vapes contain lithium batteries and plastic, and when littered they can cause harm to the local environment.
The service is now live in all of VPZ’s network of over 150 stores throughout the UK, and the service is open to all, as anyone can visit a store and dispose safely of their e-cigarettes.
All recycling processes will be handled by WasteCare, which will be responsible for safely collecting, treating, and recovering disposable vapes and reusable hardware devices from within its plant in Elland, West Yorkshire.
Mutter added that it will help clean up local environments throughout the country, while educating vapers on being responsible and using more sustainable vaping products.

Event: Histories of Tobacco
The use and trade of tobacco has a long and complex history, and is intertwined with a number of national and global social issues. The history of tobacco provides an insightful and thought-provoking perspective on the past, but also a reminder that what is uncontroversial today may be viewed very differently in the future.
The University of Bristol are hosting a panel event on 7 June to discuss these issues, with speakers including Ian Tyrrell, Patricia Nez Henderson, Virginia Berridge, George Davey Smith and Marcus Munafo.
