Texas’ illustrious military history ranges from the frontier era to 20th-century international warfare. Honor the state’s proud record of service at battlefields, forts, and sacred grounds. Make plans to visit a historic military site in Texas this summer.
* Fort Griffin [ [link removed] ] in Albany was one of the U.S. Army’s defensive forts from 1867 to 1881, during the Indian Wars. The site is also home to the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd.
* Fort Lancaster [ [link removed] ] in Sheffield preserves the remnants of one of four U.S. Army posts established in 1855 to protect the overland route between San Antonio and El Paso. It remains the only U.S. Army fort in Texas that was attacked by Native Americans.
* Fort McKavett [ [link removed] ] stands atop a remote hill in Menard County. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a Texas Indian Wars (1850–1875) military post.
* Monument Hill [ [link removed] ] in La Grange marks the tomb of the men who died during the Dawson Massacre of September 1842 and the ill-fated November 1842 Mier expedition with its dramatic Black Bean Incident.
* National Museum of the Pacific War [ [link removed] ] in Fredericksburg is the only institution in the continental United States dedicated exclusively to telling the story of the Pacific Theater in World War II.
* Sabine Pass Battleground [ [link removed] ] in Port Arthur is the location of a significant Civil War battle. The site features a monument of Confederate Lt. Richard “Dick” Dowling and interpretive exhibits.

This summer, active-duty military and their families can visit participating state historic sites for free as part of the Blue Star Museums program [ [link removed] ], which offers free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve. The 2023 Blue Star Museums program began on Armed Forces Day (May 20) and ends on Labor Day, Monday, September 4.
