"This film is very important for us at this moment. It demonstrates the artists' engagement in Amazon protection by showing the key role indigenous peoples play in defending the forests, the planet, and life itself."

In the short film Guardians of Life, which we recently released with Extinction Rebellion, Joaquin Phoenix is an emergency room surgeon who struggles heroically but ultimately fails to save an unidentified patient with "systemic failure." The time of death is called, but one of his team refuses to give up and resolutely performs CPR, saving the patient's life.
The savior, played by Q'orianka Kilcher, reveals herself to be an indigenous woman and the patient is Mother Earth, whose heart – the Amazon rainforest – is on fire. The film ends with the globe turning to reveal the next climate-induced catastrophe, the wildfires in Australia.
The film was written and directed by Shaun Monson and also features Adria Arjona, Oona Chaplin, Rosario Dawson, Albert Hammond, Jr., and Matthew Modine.
The closing message is that we still have time to save the planet, but only if we act now.
