I’d like to share with you a message from my good friend David Pepper, former Chair of the Ohio Democratic Party. He's warned of autocracy on the march in our states for a few years now, and has a new must-read book on the subject, “Saving Democracy”:

Two years ago, as we were fixated on Washington—the opening months of the Biden Administration, January 6th and its aftermath—I was disturbed by what I saw in states across the country, starting with my home state, Ohio. A non-stop attack on democracy in long-ignored statehouses across the country, while so many focused elsewhere. 

It was the exact opposite of the famous quote by Justice Brandeis (that states were “laboratories of democracy”). I realized then I’d be writing Laboratories of Autocracy. I described in painful detail how it worked, and how we could best fight back. I released the book in September 2021, and have been honored by the response ever since.

Yet, I heard a consistent refrain— “it was so painful, I had to skip to the end to learn what I could do.” So, I decided to write a follow-up book that skips to the end, explaining to every American how they can (andmust) play a role in saving our democracy.

I titled it Saving Democracy: A User’s Manual for Every American. Yesterday, we officially LAUNCHED.

I explain how we must reframe our political battle as a wider battle for democracy at all levels and go on offense. I walk through how every American can actively take part in the work I outline. I use case studies, individual success stories, even worksheets for every reader to fill out, to inspire everyday Americans to join the fight wherever they live. 

I end the book with urgency and optimism. While it's a tumultuous time, we have great opportunities. Trump, DeSantis and the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene have exposed how extreme (and deep in the minority) Republicans are. This was huge in 2022, and we must use it to forgea further comeback for American democracy in 2023 and 2024.
