Hi,
Did you know that lemurs are the most endangered group of
mammals in the world? These unique primates can be found only
on Madagascar, an island nation located off the coast of mainland
Africa. Sadly, deforestation — exacerbated by climate change — is
threatening their existence.
Madagascar is home to rich biodiversity found nowhere else in the
world. Unfortunately, an increase in deforestation took place in the
early 2000s, taking away 20% of the vital forests that make up lemur
habitats.1 Scientists have emphasized the need for
reforestation in order to protect Madagascar’s biodiversity, including
its lemurs.2 Without urgent intervention,
scientists estimate 98% of lemurs are threatened with
extinction.3
You can be a part of the solution to restore lemur habitats and
protect biodiversity by supporting The Canopy Project, through which EARTHDAY.ORG
has planted tens of millions of trees since 2010. The Canopy Project
aims to improve our shared environment and support communities through
reforestation projects in areas around the world most at risk from
climate change and environmental degradation. We must continue this
crucial work to support these important ecosystems and the vulnerable
communities and wildlife that rely upon them.
Will you help support our mission? Donate today, where
as little as $1 plants one tree.
Lemurs and trees have a symbiotic relationship which is crucial to
both biodiversity and the economic prosperity of Madagascar. Lemurs
are responsible for pollinating trees and spreading seeds as a way to
activate more tree growth. Without lemurs, the trees and other species
that rely on this habitat are threatened.
Just last year in 2022, EARTHDAY.ORG planted over 125,000 trees in
Madagascar.4 By continuing our efforts through 2023, we can
persist in our mission to restore our planet from the effects of
deforestation and climate change worldwide, including saving
biodiversity and at-risk species.
EARTHDAY.ORG’s The Canopy Project makes it possible for
Madagascar’s biodiversity to thrive once again. Your support will help plant more trees and
safeguard endangered species across the globe.
Together, our future is green.
For all of us,
Kathleen Rogers President
