The Senate vote for the conviction of Donald Trump happened just a few days ago and before I go any further, I want you to know that I voted to convict the President of the United States.

My friend and colleague, Alabama Senator Doug Jones, voted alongside me — even though it may come at a heavy price for his re-election campaign in November.

Doug took the same oath I did: Not to support the President — this one or any other — but to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. That is our job.

Our votes on the President’s abuse of power and obstruction of Congress were to uphold our oath of office and put our country first. Our votes were to uphold the rule of law and our uniquely American principle that no one — not even the President — is above the law.

Doug did the right thing, and he’s probably going to be heavily punished for it by right-wing special interest groups. But we're no strangers to using our grassroots muscle to fight back against the big and powerful. Pitch in to help him, if you can.
