Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had a busy day yesterday. Here’s what happened.

• Last night, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced his run for president. From dismantling a Black-opportunity congressional district for partisan gain to enacting voter suppression laws and stoking misinformation, DeSantis is a direct threat to democracy. 

• Just hours earlier, DeSantis signed a wide-sweeping, restrictive election bill into law. He was sued almost immediately: 

• • First, the Florida Conference of the NAACP and other organizations challenged the law’s restrictions on third-party voter registration organizations and limitations on who can request a mail-in ballot on behalf of a voter. 

• • Then, the League of Women Voters of Florida similarly sued over the law’s burdens on voter registration efforts. 

• • Today, a third lawsuit was filed against the new law, this time on behalf of two Latino civic engagement groups and several Florida voters.

Here are some other updates from today.

• A case challenging Mississippi's felony disenfranchisement law was distributed for conference today in the U.S. Supreme Court. The nine justices will privately decide whether to take up the appeal of the case. Learn more about the crucial voting rights lawsuit here.

Here are some county-level updates you may have missed.

• The Republican Party of Fort Worth-area Tarrant County, Texas is asking local leaders to eliminate countywide voting and enact a paper ballot voting system. Countywide voting, enacted in Tarrant County in 2019, allows voters to cast a ballot at any polling place in the county. 

• Meanwhile, Pinal County, Arizona looks to hand count ballots after election mistakes — in possible violation of state law.
