Dear Neighbor,
Earlier this month, I was proud to reintroduce the U.S. Citizenship Act, a bold, inclusive, and humane vision for the future of the United States immigration system. As the daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, I am honored to lead on this issue in Congress.
It’s been decades since Congress passed legislation to overhaul our immigration system. This bill, which is supported by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and President Biden, will help us grow our economy, make our borders safer and more secure, and deliver a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants already living and working here in the United States.
The U.S. Citizenship Act focuses on the people behind immigration policy. The legislation is built on a fundamental truth: we can have safe, secure borders and policies that reflect our values as a nation of immigrants.
The U.S. Citizenship Act will:
· Create an earned roadmap to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants, providing Dreamers, TPS holders, and some farmworkers with an immediate path to citizenship.
· Create safe and legal channels for people to seek protection, so they can apply for legal status in Central America instead of making the dangerous journey north.
· Address the root causes of migration from Central America.
· Keep families together by clearing immigration backlogs, including spouses and children of green card holders as immediate family members, and increasing per-country caps for family-based immigration.
· Cracks down on bad actors by enhancing the ability to prosecute individuals involved in smuggling, narcotics and trafficking networks who are responsible for drugs flowing into our country and the exploitation of migrants. It will also expand transnational anti-gang task forces in Central America.
I am proud to share that this bill is cosponsored by over 100 Members of the House of Representatives. I was honored to introduce this legislation on May 10th alongside others who have long championed immigration reform, including Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Barragán, Representative Veronica Escobar, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Judy Chu, and Vice Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Yvette Clarke.

I look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to build support for this legislation.
Stay safe,
