Dear John,

I’m excited to serve as the Acting Executive Director while Katie is taking a well-deserved sabbatical. In this role I look forward to connecting with all of you until she returns on August 1st.

As we all know, wildlife needs space to move. However, roads and highways are the #1 threat to habitat fragmentation across North America. We can estimate that at least three million animals die every day on North American roads. As a result, road crossings for wildlife are critical to biodiversity and climate resilience.

Wildlands Network is committed to reconnecting, restoring, and rewilding North America through projects focused on wildlife crossings across the continent. In 2023, we’ve already seen huge progress in government interest with $350 million of federal funds ([link removed]) designated to the first federal wildlife crossings program in history.

Wildlife crossings are tried and true solutions – it's time to make the cultural shift to prioritize wildlife crossings everywhere. Read on to learn more about our work on the ground to reconnect landscapes.

We are still celebrating a major victory in Mexico’s conservation policy: the recent ban on mining in Natural Protected Areas in Mexico! Monarch butterflies rely on Natural Protected Areas in Mexico for vital overwintering grounds found in the states of Michoacán and Estado de México. Led by our Mexico Program Policy Coordinator, Gina Chacón, we connected diverse partners and offered subject-matter expertise to aid with advocacy and collective action needed to pass this legislation.

In the first piece in the “Wildeor Voices” series, Greg Costello discusses road crossings from the perspective of those who rely on them – the animals themselves. The deer, cougars, bears, birds, and monkeys have families, communities, and stories of their own that are too often ended by collisions with cars. Magpies have funerals for their dead; rhesus monkeys carry injured friends off the road; cougars travel thousands of miles to find a home.

Greg gives life to the wild animals as fellow beings.

Between the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains and low-lying sagebrush in Northern California lies a dangerous barrier to wildlife movement – Highway 395. The stretch of U.S. 395 through Lassen County has proven to be an important migratory corridor for the Doyle deer herd and important territory for mountain lion movement, resulting in a high occurrence of wildlife-vehicle collisions. In fact, this area is one of the 10 worst deer-collision hotspots in the country.

Led by our California Program Director, Mari Galloway, Wildlands Network stepped in to lead the charge on wildlife crossings to reconnect essential habitats on either side of the highway.

Looking for a behind-the-scenes view of our research in action? “The Search for Safe Passage” documents the work Wildlands Network and our partner the National Parks Conservation Association conducted in the Pigeon River Gorge. In one of the largest projects of its kind, we identified wildlife activity and vehicle-collision hotspots to incorporate wildlife pathways into infrastructure.

Last year, Wildlands Network released a new report identifying the highest priority sites for enhancing wildlife’s ability to safely cross highways in North Carolina using wildlife crossing structures.

North Carolina is now considering state budget proposals that would fund wildlife crossings. Stay tuned for updates.
