John

Thank you.

Thank you for helping and voting. Just seven days ago, polling stations were open and people were voting to elect local Councillors across Northern Ireland.

173,033 people cast their first preference vote for DUP candidates, and many others transferred to DUP candidates, ensuring that 122 DUP Councillors were returned.

Our mandate has been renewed, and every DUP Councillor is pledged to seek better services with low rates and to focus on the issues that really matter to ratepayers.

The election wasn’t just focused on Council issues however, and the wider political picture dominated the campaign.

As we knocked on thousands of doors and spoke to countless people, we sought a mandate to re-establish the Northern Ireland Assembly on a fair and sustainable basis by finishing the job of protecting Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom and its internal market.

It will only be through that solid foundation of restoring and strengthening our place within the United Kingdom that progress can be made. Following last year’s Assembly election, some said the DUP would “weaken”. Unfortunately, we hear those same lies being peddled again today.

We haven’t come this far to just come this far. We are in this to get it right.

As I reflect on the election, we hear the pleas for greater cooperation within the unionist family. The constant inter-unionist wrangling of some is damaging.

Whilst the Sinn Fein result has grabbed the headlines, fewer have focused on the fact that the combined SF and SDLP vote was around 40% in 1998 and its still around 40%.

Regardless of what is going on within republicanism, our focus is on making Northern Ireland work and growing the support for our pro-union argument.

We are open to discussions about how we can make unionism more cohesive, effective and to both increase turnout at elections and to maximise the number of unionist representatives returned.

Finally, many of you reading this message will already be members of the Party, but others are not. If you haven’t already joined the Party, then I encourage you to get involved today. If you’re already a member, then encourage your friends and family to join with us and help build a stronger Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom.

Best wishes,

Gordon Lyons MLA
