The United States could run out of money and default on the federal debt as soon as next week, causing unthinkable damage to the U.S. economy.

Meanwhile, MAGA Republicans continue to openly threaten to drive the country into default unless Democrats agree to catastrophic cuts to nearly every federal program, from food stamps to student debt relief to veterans’ health care.

But there is good news: President Biden has repeatedly said that he may invoke his constitutional authority under the 14th Amendment to solve the debt ceiling crisis without giving in to the MAGA demands — and a growing group in Congress is getting on board with the idea as well.

Here’s the rub: the corporate media continues to talk about the 14th Amendment as some kind of fringe idea, despite the fact that it plainly states that “The validity of the public debt of the United States … shall not be questioned.” Given so much terrible media coverage, President Biden may feel that he has no choice but to make a deal with the Republican hostage-takers.

Republicans raised the debt ceiling three times under Trump — who added more to the nation’s debt than all but two other presidents.

Now that they control the House, the MAGA faithful claim to care about the deficit again, demanding hateful cuts to food stamps, Medicaid, clean energy, and virtually every other program that helps American families. At the same time, they’ve rejected out of hand any proposals to repeal tax cuts and loopholes for the wealthy.

And with Trump as their top cheerleader, they’ve shown every willingness to plunge the world economy into chaos by refusing to raise the debt ceiling if they don’t get their way.

We’ve been urging President Biden for months to reject these negotiations and simply use his executive authority under the 14th Amendment to end this manufactured crisis once and for all.

Sadly, the corporate media has always done a poor job explaining this issue to the public, and this time is no different. So it’s up to us to explain what’s really going on through our proven-effective social media explainers and viral videos.
