Forests provide a long list of benefits — some obvious, some not. While forests serve as hubs for biodiversity and store carbon, they also reduce the risk of diseases, reduce air pollution and provide water to cities located up to thousands of miles away. In honor of International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22nd), researchers from WRI’s Cities4Forests

One of the world’s most powerful ecosystems is located beneath its surface. Seagrass is found in nearly every ocean in the world; more than 1 billion people live within 100 kilometers of seagrass meadows, and there are more than 72 species of it! Cyclone Freddy wreaked havoc on communities in Malawi, Madagascar and Mozambique, impacting more than 2 million people, while years of extreme flooding left two-thirds of South Sudan underwater and one million facing food insecurity. These events are only the latest in a series that prove the effects of climate change are already here, and vulnerable countries who often contribute the least emissions are disproportionately feeling the impacts. The Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025), a group comprised of think tanks from vulnerable developing countries, released a new Call to Action

City residents may not realize how forests impact so many aspects of their daily lives, but a growing body of research shows that even forests located far away from urban centers provide tremendous benefits in regulating the climate, water and biodiversity systems essential for people’s health and quality of life.
