As you may know, the deadline to reach an agreement to avoid defaulting on our debt is looming over our country, and I wanted to reach out with a few thoughts.

President Biden is hard at work negotiating with both parties to reach a deal before June 1. Legislation like this takes time, and I commend him for trying to reach a bipartisan agreement to ensure we do not default on our debts.

But let me be clear: Democrats will not side with a small group of GOP extremists that want to hold our economy hostage in order to enact cruel cuts to programs like Medicare and Social Security that keep Americans healthy, safe, and secure.

Extreme Republicans are playing a dangerous game that in the end will harm the American people. If efforts to reach a compromise with Republicans fail, House Democrats are ready to bring a bill to the floor to get a clean agreement that will not cut vital programs for veterans, seniors, and working Americans.

I am ready to continue negotiations because Ohio deserves a leader who will work until the job is done.
