In one week, the U.S. will face a critical deadline on debt ceiling negotiations and choose whether they will raise the debt ceiling to protect Americans and the world from economic catastrophe.

Earlier this month, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told the world that the U.S. is at risk of defaulting on its financial responsibilities if we do not raise the debt ceiling by June 1st. And that deadline is looming.

While Democrats have been negotiating nonstop to raise the debt ceiling immediately and pay back its debt, House Republicans have been holding the economy hostage, threatening a default if they do not get their proposed spending cuts to social safety net programs, education, and environmental protections.

House Republicans have made it abundantly clear that they will prioritize their self-interests over the needs of Americans — rejecting over $3 trillion worth of policies going toward deficit reduction. These policies include:

• Ending tax subsidies for big oil companies
• Closing tax loopholes for big businesses
• Increasing the number of drugs that Medicare can negotiate prices on
• A global minimum tax on billionaires and corporations

Republicans claim to care about the national debt but want to give trillions of dollars of tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and large corporations at the expense of critical programs that help working families. But that’s not all: they are willing to put the global economy at risk if they do not get their way.

This is outrageous and frightening. If we default on our financial responsibilities, the livelihoods of middle and working-class Americans will be at risk, along with many other federal programs that provide relief to Americans in need.

So please join me in calling on Congress to raise the debt ceiling to avoid economic catastrophe. It’s time Republicans act in the interest of the people, not corporations.

These negotiations have made the priorities of GOP lawmakers clear — they will always choose their interests over the American people. And we will fight to ensure those lawmakers will face consequences at the ballot box.
