I heard a knock at the door.

It was an AT&T service provider. He immediately started interrogating me: “Ma’am, even though the telephone box is on your land, it’s technically still the property of the phone company. You aren’t allowed to mess with it.”

I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. “Sir, I can ASSURE you that neither my husband, Mark, nor I have touched your AT&T phone box. I don’t even know where it is!”

He walked me around to the side of our home and showed me where someone had pried open the phone box.

Inside, the wires were unraveled, and their coating was peeled back.

I was shocked. I told him I didn't know how that had happened. After he left, I called one of our friends who works in security, and he immediately came to take a look.

“Yep, someone pried open your box and tapped your phone lines. It’s likely that they were standing here, next to your house, listening to your phone calls.”

Again, I was shocked. This is the sort of thing you read about in conspiracy theories. Not something that happens to your average soccer mom, living in a town where no one even locks their doors, who just so happened to be helping her husband plan a Tea Party rally at the time.

Then I remembered.

During a recent visit with a friend, a White House security agent warned us that people were tapping our phone lines, going through our trash, and were inside our house when we didn’t realize it.

Mark and I had brushed it off as just some sort of crazy conspiracy and didn’t give it a second thought.

So to say this situation was a wake-up call would be an understatement.

The next week, I was driving our kids to school, and as I was leaving our lane, I noticed our trash can was gone. I thought it was strange because I had put it out the night before.

Maybe the garbage truck grabbed it by accident? I quickly jumped out of the car and looked at the neighbors' cans. They were still full, so the trash hadn’t been picked up yet. Plus, our can was a different color than the others and had our initials on the side of it, so it was unlikely a neighbor had grabbed it accidentally.

Weird.

I jumped back in my car to get the kids to school. When I returned later in the day, our trash can was back. But it was full of trash, and all of our neighbors’ cans were empty.

When I looked inside, I realized that the contents that had been on the top were now at the bottom of the can… and the trash that had been at the bottom was now on top.

When I told Mark, we immediately realized that this was no accident. Someone had clearly taken our can, gone through the contents, and then returned it after the trash had already run.

I was shaken up. We had young kids. We were just average people, living in small town America, who had decided to help throw some political rallies. This shouldn’t be happening to us.

I turned to my husband and told him just how freaked out I was by all of this.

Years later, I still remember his response: “Hon, we’re in this until the end. We have way too much work to do to save the nation to be concerned about this. We’ve just got to keep moving forward.”

So that’s exactly what we did… after installing a strong security system (and hanging the silhouettes from my target practice in the trees outside the house).

Now, almost a decade later, we’re still fighting.

I know this email is long, but I just want you to know that when Mark pledges to you his “Life, Fortune, and Sacred Honor”... he means it.

He’s not afraid of any of the scare tactics the opposition will use to undermine us — since starting the national Tea Party movement and now seeing so much momentum behind calling an Article V Convention — believe me when I say we’ve seen it all.

And we know that the opposition will only stoop to lower and lower tactics as we get closer to the convention.

But it doesn’t matter. We’re in it until the end, and we’re asking you to join us. ([link removed])

I’m going to be straight with you — this email may be uncomfortable to read. But it’s my job to be transparent, and this needs to be said.

Sometimes I get asked from folks, “Why do you keep asking me for money?”

It pains me to hear that, because I wish we didn’t have to ask. But it takes money to run a large (and ever growing) national organization, and we raise most of our money from the grassroots.

I’ve been ruminating a lot on this fundraising stuff lately, and that’s why I’m coming to you today. I genuinely need your help. And yes, I’m going to ask you for money. So if this offends you, I apologize in advance, but we do indeed need your help.

Honestly, it’s not an option to not ask for your help. It would be irresponsible if we are indeed committed to the fight.

Even George Washington had to go to the Continental Congress (repeatedly, I might add) to get the funding he needed for the troops.

Convention of States Action has grown into the largest and most effective grassroots army in the nation. But that growth isn’t easy. It’s not because of emails or texts or a cool website. It’s because we invest in the support staff that it takes to be hands-on with our grassroots.

It’s because we travel and spend the time and resources to be on the ground with them. High-tech is fine…but high-touch and real relationships are what it takes to grow, maintain, and improve a grassroots army.

So I’m coming to you with an idea… with a question really. Is it worth $1.00 per day to you to help us continue to grow and support the grassroots army we need to save the country?

Really… just $1.00 per day. Can’t even get a cup of coffee for that anymore. Even the average donut is more than a buck. But if you’ll commit $1.00 per day, you can make a tremendous difference.
