An important update from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

John,

In 2010, the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United opened the door to unlimited election spending. The Court said that it wouldn’t increase corruption and claimed that candidates and their donors would be accountable. Ten years later, we’ve seen the exact opposite.

The Citizens United decision has allowed billions in dark money to flood into federal elections since 2010. Today, outside groups are spending more than ever before to directly influence elections. Untraceable money now dominates our elections, and can even swing outcomes. Yet voters remain in the dark about who is trying to influence their vote or buy their elected officials.

Because money in politics played a role in the elections of many people in power, some will certainly be reluctant to stop the flow of money. We can’t let that stop us from fighting for reform.

Congress needs to protect democracy by removing dark money from politics. Sign now and tell Congress to address dark money and end unlimited spending on our elections.

Dark money is only going to continue seeping into executive, legislative and judicial elections, appointments, and decisions if Congress doesn’t act.

Unlimited contributions fuel the growing influence of powerful corporate interests already threatening our democracy. CREW has been committed to the fight to end dark money for over a decade, but taking action against individual violators can only go so far: we need Congress to take action on campaign finance reform to fix the bigger problem. Call on Congress now to enact legislation that will tackle dark money and stop unlimited secret spending on our elections.

Thank you,

The CREW Team
