Dear John,
A year after Russia’s unprovoked, full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many hoped that the Ukrainians’ heroic defense against authoritarian aggression would galvanize democracy’s supporters throughout Europe and Eurasia.
Instead, Moscow’s devastating attack on Ukrainian democracy deepened the gulf between free societies and entrenched autocracies, according to the latest edition of Freedom House’s annual Nations in Transit report.
Free governments must lay the groundwork for an enduring campaign of democratization at home and abroad, and not forget that those living under repressive regimes deserve their support.
