There have been more mass shootings in our country this year than there have been days, John.
Each new shooting is a devastating shock. It’s also unfortunately becoming familiar territory for our country. There have been over 200 mass shootings this year alone.
We must do more to address the gun violence epidemic -- now.
Last year, Democrats passed and President Biden signed the first new gun violence prevention law in decades and I recently reintroduced my bill to close the Charleston loophole that allows people to buy guns without completing a background check.
We must also take steps to address the rise of mass shootings committed with assault-style weapons.
In recent years, assault weapons were used in a third of all mass shooting deaths in our country. These were the types of guns used in the Nashville school shooting and the mall shooting in Allen, Texas.
Assault rifles are weapons of war. They have no place in our communities.
Research shows if we pass an assault weapons ban, we could see 70% fewer mass shooting deaths, and a recent poll found the majority of Americans support such a ban.
