Here are some updates you may have missed.
Today, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission to run for president. He’s expected to announce his candidacy on Twitter this evening — look out for our breakdown of his voting rights record. [link removed]
DeSantis also signed an omnibus election bill into law, which includes changes to the state’s resign-to-run law . Soon after, a lawsuit was filed challenging the law’s restrictions on third-party voter registration organizations and limitations on who can request a mail-in ballot on behalf of a voter. Also today, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) signed a state government funding bill into law that includes several pro-voting reforms, such as expanding in-person early voting and restricting mass voter challenges. [link removed]
Yesterday, Maricopa County filed for sanctions against Kari Lake and her attorneys after her failed second trial in her election contest over the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race, in which she lost by over 17,000 votes. The county argues that "Lake and her counsel engaged in a program of intentional and repeated fallacious misstatements of fact to mislead" the court.[link removed]
Last Thursday, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) led the reintroduction of a bill to restore voting rights for federal elections to all individuals released from incarceration. The bill aims to standardize a patchwork of state laws. [link removed]
Here’s what to expect coming up.
Tomorrow morning, the U.S. Supreme Court will release opinions in argued cases. The Court may release decisions in any of the cases already argued this term, including the major elections cases Allen v. Milligan and Moore v. Harper. [link removed] [link removed]
