Here’s what happened this week in Harrisburg:
HB 1018 – Extreme Risk Protection Orders
Would establish Extreme Risk Protection Orders so that loved ones, family members, or law enforcement officers are legally able to ask a Judge to hold a hearing to temporarily disarm an individual in crisis. Through this legislation, we hope we can reduce gun suicides in Pennsylvania and provide some comfort to loved ones during a crisis. Passed the House 102-99.
HB 714 – Background Checks for Firearms
Would require background checks for all firearms, regardless of barrel length, before purchase of new firearms. The language in this bill would close a dangerous loophole and ensure that the sale or transfer of any firearm is safe and legal. Passed the House 109-92.
HB 917 – Uniform Family Law Arbitration
Would provide families with a voluntary and private process for resolving disputes instead of going to court. This legislation, from Rep. Melissa Shusterman, would help to save families time, money, and stress during extremely difficult situations. Passed the House 201-0.
HB 409 – Mental Health Care Services Clearinghouse
Would establish a Mental Health Care Services Clearinghouse, a publicly accessible registry of mental health resources, to assist school personnel in connecting families to local mental health resources. Schools also would be able to use these services for their students. Passed the House 155-46.
HB 797 – Native Vegetation Along Pennsylvania’s Highways
Would require PennDOT to develop a list of native vegetation species to be used in roadside work throughout the state. It would help to strengthen PA’s natural ecosystems and ensure plants will thrive and adapt to local weather conditions. Passed the House 201-0.
