Since the United States hit the debt ceiling in January, the dynamic between House Republicans and the rest of the government has been clear: It’s a hostage crisis.

Republicans are threatening economic default―a million jobs lost in the first week, payments stopped on Social Security checks, Veterans’ benefits, Medicare payments to doctors, and more―if Joe Biden doesn’t cave to their demands to slash spending on Social Security offices and Meals on Wheels, among other things, while preserving tax cuts for the ultra-rich.

Social Security Works has been calling this a hostage crisis from day 1. Now, in a rare moment of bipartisan agreement, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has agreed. He told Semafor’s Joseph Zeballos-Roig¹ that his conservative colleagues “don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.”
