Shell is celebrating record profits while the planet burns. It's time to make polluters pay for climate damage

Hi John,
Yesterday we joined a wide range of groups to protest at Shell’s annual meeting in London. Shell has made unprecedented billions in profit this year at a time of spiralling energy bills and a continuing climate emergency. There was singing, chanting, powerful speeches – and shareholders dragged out for demanding a liveable planet!

Just a few days ago, scientists warned that the world is set to breach the 1.5C of heating threshold for the first time in the coming years. It’s the latest sign that the impacts of climate change are already here – and that’s why it is urgent that we start to make polluters like Shell pay for the loss and damage they are causing.

Shell alone is responsible for an estimated $1.5 trillion of climate costs to the global south, based on its historic greenhouse gas emissions. Yet this company is still drilling for new oil and gas in multiple countries. We can’t let this continue.

John, can you join our campaign to make polluters like Shell pay for the climate damage they are causing around the world? It only takes 30 seconds to add your name.

Shell’s answer to the protests yesterday was to say that they want a “civilised debate”, and “we agree that society needs to take action on climate change”. It was more classic delaying tactics from a company that wants to keep profiteering from fossil fuel extraction until the last possible second.

Yet Shell and its shareholders will continue laughing all the way to bank unless governments like the UK commit to making them pay for the climate damage they have caused. Polling has shown that this is popular – but it won’t happen without concerted public pressure.

Last year at the COP27 UN climate summit, agreement was reached to set up a loss and damage fund for the global south. For the first time, the world’s governments recognised that those responsible for the climate crisis must compensate those on the front line for the devastating impacts they are causing. It was a historic step forward – but now we need to make sure big oil companies like Shell are forced to pay into the fund by governments like the UK.

Can you help keep the pressure on the UK by adding your name to our petition to make polluters pay for climate damage now? Join more than 20,000 of us in taking a stand for climate justice.

By taking action together we can turn the outrage so many of us feel at companies like Shell into ongoing pressure for change.

Thanks for everything you’re doing,
