Dear John,
Every child has the right to a safe and healthy home.
Yet, today in Canada, a greater percentage of First Nations children are being taken away from their homes and their families than at the height of the residential school era.
This is happening because their families may not have the resources to meet all their needs, and because child welfare services in First Nations communities also don’t have the resources that are urgently needed to support these families.
At the heart of the problem is the Canadian government's long-standing underfunding of First Nations family services. Federal funding is much less per child than provincial and territorial funding for services in predominantly non-Aboriginal communities. This is despite often greater needs and the higher costs of delivering services in small and remote First Nations communities.
This discriminatory funding gap hurts First Nations children and families. It must end.
On February 14th, you can support First Nations children by sending a Valentine to Prime Minister Trudeau as part of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada's “Have a Heart” campaign to finally end racial discrimination in government services to First Nations children.
Visit our Have a Heart Day page to learn how you can take part on your own or with others in your community.
It's long past time for Canada to finally ensure that all First Nations children and families have full and equitable access to the quality of services they need and deserve.
Thank you for supporting #HaveaHeartDay!
