Hi John,
For several months now, disturbing legislation attempting to ban certain immigrants from owning property have been introduced in over 30 states across the country. At least 9 of those bills would directly target Iranians, and 3 have been signed into law by Republican governors.
In response, NIAC Action is working with and helping lead a powerful multiethnic coalition [[link removed]] of immigrant community, housing rights and civil rights allies to halt these measures in their tracks , earning national attention [[link removed]] in the process. Learn about every property-ban targeting our community here [[link removed]]
We will not stand by and allow state-backed ethnic profiling and discrimination against our community or other immigrant communities seeking to buy a home or property. That's why NIAC Action is working nonstop through grassroots advocacy and, where that fails, legal action to prevent these discriminatory measures from going into effect. Already, litigation has been filed by our allies ACLU and CALDA against Florida Governor Ron Desantis and NIAC is seeking Iranian American plaintiffs [[link removed]] to join this critical initiative.
But this effort requires serious resources. Mobilizing our grassroots at the local level, monitoring legislatures and advocating in dozens of states, and undertaking legal action where necessary is a major undertaking and requires serious funding. Nobody is going to stand up for us if we don't stand up for ourselves, and that is why we are asking again for your support.
Please consider making a donation of $100, $250, or an amount that is right for you so that we have the means to defeat these measures before they become the norm. Donate to niac's campaign to stop discriminatory property ban laws [[link removed]]
Here is a brief update on where our campaign stands in three key battlegrounds:
In Texas, we've managed to halt the property-ban bill (for now) - Since Governor Abbott announced he would sign the bill, we have mobilized to prevent SB147 from reaching his desk with our strong and growing coalition. This bill would have prohibited property purchases by citizens of designated countries, including Iran, China, North Korea, or Russia. Now, thanks to the tireless campaign from our coalition, the bill has not moved out of the Texas House legislature despite passing the State Senate. With few days left in the legislative session, this bill is on ice, though we will continue monitoring it closely.
In Louisiana , we've achieved a partial win - With the help of grassroots volunteers and coalition partners on the ground in Louisiana, we've secured amendments that protect lawful residents from a bill that would have encouraged sellers to back out of contracts if they had any "suspicion" a buyer was "connected" to a "foreign adversary".
In Florida , Governor DeSantis signed a similar bill & we are supporting legal action against it - This law will prohibit certain individuals from “countries of concern” from purchasing property in many locations across the state. Individuals purchasing many forms of property in Florida must now sign an affidavit claiming they are not “domiciled” in a “country of concern,” including Iran. Our coalition is actively seeking potential plaintiffs for a lawsuit to challenge this unjust law. If you are, or if you know, a Florida resident who could be affected, please sign & share this intake form for potential plaintiffs [[link removed]] . For a more detailed explanation of the Florida bill, check out our memo here [[link removed]] .
Our ability to stop, slow down, and challenge these discriminatory proposals is a testament to the power of our grassroots organizing and multiethnic coalition building. But to stand strong against these attacks on our communities and champion the civil rights of all immigrant communities, we need your support. Donate [[link removed]]
Thank you for your continued support and engagement in this crucial fight.
