Hi John,

Across the country, landlords are locking tenants out of potential homes because of background checks. This discriminatory practice is called “tenant screening.” And it’s not right.
But today, we have a chance to tell the federal government about the problems tenants face when applying for housing. And if we get enough stories submitted before May 30th, we'll send a clear message: stop discriminatory tenant screening. Will you join us?

Tell your story, or reach out to tenant leaders to support them in telling their stories, to help hold landlords and background check companies accountable for the harm they cause. Click here for easy instructions on how to share your story before May 30th!

Landlords and background check companies need to be held accountable — for charging too many fees, denying people housing because of past criminal or eviction records, denying people because of a credit check, or never telling people why they were denied. That’s why we're supporting the effort by Policy Link, People’s Tech Project, and Upturn to collect as many stories as possible to push back.
Our elected leaders need to stop discriminatory tenant screening practices. The Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are requesting information from the public — us — about tenant screening. So they need to hear real life stories about our experiences applying for housing.

Our stories are powerful. And today we have a chance to tell our stories together to demand homes for all. We hope you’ll join us in taking action today.

In community,

Matt and the Right to the City team
