Dear John,
As a young man, Dr. E. Fuller Torrey was frustrated by the ineffective treatment available for his younger sister, Rhoda, when she developed schizophrenia after she turned 18. Even worse, doctors knew little about the cause of schizophrenia and blamed their mother for causing the disease.
This experience not only gave him a personal understanding of the isolation, fear, and desperation that so many families face when a loved one is experiencing severe mental illness; it also led him to devote his life’s work to eliminating barriers to treatment for people with severe mental illness and their loved ones.
