John,
Today is a sad day. One year ago, our country lost 19 children and two adults to gun violence following a violent mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for kids in America. It's beyond unacceptable — I didn't risk my life overseas for our children to live in fear like this here at home.
Simply put, the increasing level of gun violence we’ve seen in our country is an attack on our freedom and the American way of life. As a combat veteran, I understand what it means to bear arms, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the traumatic toll of using weapons of war.
No one should be made to feel unsafe — whether in a school, a church, or a grocery store. But recent events have proven that even moments that happen in everyday life — like knocking on the wrong door or turning into the wrong driveway — can lead to a deadly shooting.
It is a disgrace to the families of Uvalde, Nashville, Sandy Hook, Parkland — the list could go on — that the bloodshed continues. Republicans are more scared of the NRA than the carnage in our schools. But I'm a combat veteran — the NRA doesn't scare me.
If elected, I will work endlessly to support an assault weapons ban, hold gun manufacturers accountable, and do everything in my power to protect our communities and keep our children safe.
Thanks for hearing me out.
Ashley
