ICYMI, the U.S. could default on its debt on June 1st.

What does that actually mean? If the U.S. does not raise the debt ceiling before June 1, we could face stock market collapse, rise in unemployment, and a global financial crisis.

What’s holding it up? Right now, Joe Manchin and Republicans are holding the must-pass debt ceiling deal hostage unless Democrats agree to dangerous “permitting reform” and a repeal of hard-won climate laws. We can’t afford to let that happen.

If they win, they would fast-track pipelines and dirty fossil fuel projects — weakening our environmental protections and making us more vulnerable to oil spills, gas leaks, air and water pollution, and more carbon emissions that would worsen the climate crisis.

Here’s the thing - the GOP doesn’t have the votes they need to pass this deal and if Democrats in Congress hold the line, we can stop it. That’s why we need to send a loud and clear message to Biden and every Democrat in Congress: don’t negotiate our futures away. Leave climate out of the debt ceiling deal, or you risk losing our generation in 2024.
