Friend — there’s a new development threatening to upend negotiations over climate investments in Congress: Senator Joe Manchin has re-proposed his permitting rollback bill that would rubber-stamp fossil fuel development and other polluting projects without comprehensive assessment of environmental impact or public comment. Manchin’s proposal is only slightly less extreme and damaging than House Republicans’ proposed permitting attacks in H.R.1, dubbed the “Polluters over People” Act, which promised to expand oil and gas drilling on federal land and eviscerate all of our longstanding and popular environmental protections. MAGA extremists in the House are already holding the economy hostage in an attempt to defund environmental enforcement and all clean energy and climate investments, and ram through their H.R.1 to gut environmental laws. With Manchin proposing similar anti-environment policies to aid the fossil fuel industry at the same time, the next ten days of negotiations and votes will be critical for the environment. We’re reaching out to every LCV member right now -- we rapidly need to scale up our campaign to back up President Biden and Democratic congressional leadership holding the line for a clean debt ceiling bill, but right now, we’re still $20,000 short of our fundraising goal.
