John,
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his presidential
campaign tomorrow. With both Trump and DeSantis in the race we can assume
this will be a very competitive primary, and California could play a huge
role.
That could have a serious effect on our race. Here's how:
On March 5, 2024, voters will be choosing which two Senate candidates will
advance to the general election. In California, those top two candidates
can be from either party—so that means two Democrats, two Republicans, or
one of each could advance to November. Now, on that same ballot will
likely be a highly competitive Republican presidential primary.
A competitive and consequential GOP primary will juice turnout for the
Republican candidate in our own Senate primary.
It will also make TV ad time significantly more expensive, as Trump,
DeSantis, and their super PACs dominate airspace and drive up prices—we
could have to make cuts to our own planned advertisements.
We need to be prepared for how a competitive Republican presidential
primary could make our race even more expensive.
