It has not been an inspiring week in American politics. Instead of standing up for the constitution, the rule of law, and the integrity of our elections, nearly all Republicans in the Senate bowed to a corrupt bully. And since then, we have seen all of Donald Trump's worst qualities on display.

But if you want some inspiration, take a look at U.S. Senator Doug Jones. The safe move for a guy running for re-election in Alabama would have been to side with Trump, and vote to acquit him. But that's not who Doug Jones is. Remember, he was the prosecutor who doggedly pursued justice against the KKK a quarter century after a church bombing killed four young girls.

When it came to Trump, Doug considered the evidence. He listened to his heart. And he took a stand for a better, more accountable America by voting to convict Donald Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

To say he's facing an uphill climb in his re-election campaign in Alabama is putting it lightly. Which is why he needs our support right now.

Doug said that his vote was not an act of political courage, that it was "simply a matter of right and wrong, where doing right is not a courageous act; it is simply following your oath."

But we know the truth -- doing right will come at a cost. If you know one thing about Donald Trump and his Twitter troll army, it's that they're viciously vindictive.

That's why I want us to stand together and support Doug today. Let's keep him in the U.S. Senate.

2020 is a critical year. Democrats have a lot of seats to pick up, and one big one we must defend.

Alabama's a tough place for a Democrat, but Senator Doug Jones held his ground and stood up for what's right. Trump and his deep-pocketed allies will certainly try to punish him, so let's stand with Doug now.
