John, Right-wing extremist Tucker Carlson, who was fired by Fox News last month, recently announced that he will be relaunching his show on Twitter. For over a decade, the former cable talk-show host used that platform to spread lies and disinformation about our democracy, including the Big Lie that the 2020 election was “stolen” from Donald Trump. Carlson’s announcement follows a disturbing trend of increased disinformation and hate speech on Twitter since Elon Musk took over as CEO. In less than a year, Musk has facilitated the reinstatement of several previously-banned accounts belonging to white supremacists and neo-Nazis, as well as figures like Donald Trump, who used the social media platform to incite an armed insurrection against the United States government. One thing remains clear: we cannot continue to depend on the whims of profit-seeking CEOs to moderate disinformation on major publishing platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Sign the petition: Congress must hold Big Tech companies like Twitter accountable when they spread disinformation and threats of violence on their platforms. Free Speech For People introduced the Big Tech Accountability Act, a model bill designed to hold social media companies accountable for amplifying disinformation and violence via their online platforms. Now, we need your support in urging Congress to adopt this critical legislation. Carlson’s impending move to Twitter signals the urgency of the moment. Congress must take meaningful action to hold Big Tech accountable and protect internet users, voters, and the broader community. We cannot allow social media companies to amplify, without any real accountability, disinformation and threats of violence from extremists like Carlson. Tell Congress: Hold Big Tech accountable.
