John,
Congress has just 8 days to raise the debt ceiling and prevent an economic catastrophe. With so much on the line, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy—and the right-wing factions of his party—are still demanding cruel cuts to essential human needs programs that target the aging, children, families, veterans, and vulnerable communities.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We only need a few House Republicans to join with Democrats to pass a clean debt ceiling increase. We need them to put the good of the country first and vote for a clean debt ceiling increase.
We need to keep the pressure on Congress to act.

And here’s a script you can use:
Hello, I'm a constituent from [part of state] and I'm calling to ask [name of Member of Congress] to raise the debt ceiling with NO CUTS to your constituents—older people, children, families, and veterans.
The Trump tax cuts for the rich and corporations added trillions to the debt. If Congress is serious about reducing the debt, start by rolling back those tax cuts—NOT by cutting Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, public schools, roads, child care, [or other priorities important to your community].
I'm disappointed that the representative supported the bill to hurt families and make it easier for rich tax cheats to break the law. Please reject any deal that cuts critical programs, costs jobs, and hurts your constituents.
If you have a Democratic Representative, call this number: 1-844-999-2786

This is urgent. A default could happen as early as next week, impacting millions of retirees, people with disabilities, federal workers, veterans and active-duty military, and millions of children and families who rely on nutritional programs, Medicaid, and much more.
We can lower costs for families, invest in our future, AND reduce the national debt when we make the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share in taxes. President Biden’s budget is proof of that.1 We just need Congress to have the courage to do what is right and pass a debt ceiling increase without cuts to essential programs.
Thank you,
Deborah Weinstein
