After decades of hard work together, we now see unprecedented bipartisan support for untaxing groceries in Alabama. Thanks to your advocacy, our lawmakers are finally feeling the urgency.

Alabama’s state sales tax on groceries is a cruel tax on survival, particularly for people struggling to make ends meet. John, you value the health and well-being of our community. Can you chip in with a gift today to fuel our efforts to remove the state grocery tax once and for all?

The grocery tax increases hunger rates and keeps Alabamians who are living paycheck to paycheck from affording other basic needs. It also is one of the major reasons that our state’s tax system is upside down, with low- and middle-income families paying twice as much of their income in state and local taxes on average as the wealthiest households.

Alabama is one of only three states with no tax break on groceries. We must seize the opportunity to remove our state from that shameful list. It is imperative that our legislators untax groceries to help struggling families put food on the table.

Excitingly, we have seen several bills introduced this year that would remove or reduce the grocery tax in Alabama. This includes two bills that have garnered support from nearly all members of the Legislature! And we expect the House to vote on one of those bills this week. As Rep. Penni McClammy, D-Montgomery said: “We’ve talked about this over and over and over. It is time.”

We agree: The time to untax groceries is now. Alabama Arise has a goal of raising $75,000 by June 30 to support our work at the State House, including efforts to reduce or eliminate the state grocery tax.
