Keeping an eye on Trump 2.0 coverage

CNN's town hall with former President Donald Trump earlier this month may not have been must-see TV, but it certainly became must-comment TV.

Poynter's Tom Jones predicted that CNN's Kaitlan Collins was handed a tall order to keep the former president and his fact distortion machine under control — and Jones was right. While Jones made the case that Collins did her best under the circumstances, CNN was blasted for hosting the event at all, which he likened more to a Trump rally than a town hall.

In the days following the event, CNN CEO Chris Licht stood by the cable channel's decision to air the event, though as Jones reported this week, Licht admitted they'd do things a little differently given the chance at a do-over.

CNN star Christiane Amanpour was displeased with CNN's decision-making, while Poynter freelancer and media ethics professor Micheal Bugeja noted, "The backlash is a lesson for outlets that cotton to a particular political psychographic and then decide to abandon it, failing to retain regular viewers while divining for new ones."

PolitiFact even issued a fact check after false information surfaced about future CNN live audiences.

Collins' efforts to interview an uncooperative source and CNN's decisions about how to use its airtime are just some of the looming issues for journalists that surround the coverage of Trump 2.0 (Subscribing to Jones' newsletter is one great way to keep up.)
